Most of the web runs on open source software, including Drupal, the content management system behind the websites we build. We build on open source every day, and we publish the tools we create so others can use and improve them.

What open source is

Open source software is software whose source code is published for anyone to use, study, change and share. Its licence keeps it that way, so every improvement stays open to the people who come after. Drupal is open source, and so is most of what a modern website runs on: the operating system, the web server, the database and the programming languages.

Why we do it

Everything we use to build, test and deliver Drupal websites is published openly on GitHub, for 4 reasons:

  • You can see how your website is built. The tooling behind every project we deliver is public, so you, your team or an independent reviewer can inspect it.
  • Many teams make it stronger. Tools used by teams around the world are tested across far more projects than any single agency runs, and every fix flows back to your project.
  • Your website stays yours. A project built on public, documented tooling can be picked up by any Drupal team.
  • We give back. Drupal and the tools around it are built by a community. Contributing our own work is how we pay that forward.

Beyond our own projects

CivicTheme is the open-source design system used in Australian government: we worked with Salsa Digital to provide engineering, technical leadership, maintenance and release management.

Also as a subcontractor to Salsa Digital, we contributed to the build scaffold of GovCMS, the Australian Government's shared Drupal service.

Projects we maintain

All our projects are on GitHub(Opens in a new tab/window). Issues, ideas and pull requests are welcome.
